世界的写真家 ”アニー・リーボヴィッツ” 氏による肖像写真展「WOMEN:New Portraits」が、東京でもスタート。1年かけて開催される今回の巡回展は、ロンドンを皮切りに東京、サンフランシスコほか、シンガポールやメキシコ、フランクフルト、ニューヨークと各都市で行われる予定。
アニー・リーボヴィッツ氏は、1970年代初頭ローリング・ストーン誌の写真ジャーナリストとしてキャリアをスタート、以来ポップ・カルチャーの力強く鮮烈なイメージを映し続けている。本写真展は、リーボヴィッツ氏が15年前に始めた「WOMEN」プロジェクトの一環となる。UBSを独占コミッショニング・パートナーとして開催される展覧会では、現代女性の役割の変化を反映した新作が発表され、東京、サンフランシスコ、香港、シンガポール、メキシコシティ、イスタンブール、フランクフルト、ニューヨーク、チューリッヒなど世界10都市を約1年かけて巡回する。
2月17日に開催された記者発表会では、アニー・リーボヴィッツ本人の来場はもちろん、刺激的で貴重な話を聞く事ができた。

Annie Leibovitz is responsible for some of the most iconic portraits of our time. Her seminal body of work with Susan Sontag, ‘Women’, sought to portray women more extensively than the stereotypical roles they were often confined to in respect to photographical representation by placing coal miners alongside movie stars, politicians with show girls and poets with painters. Now, in an exhibition to tour the globe supported by UBS continues this body of work. Annie was in Tokyo to introduce the exhibition last week. She talked of how she had bought her first camera in Japan and taken it on a trip to climb Mount Fuji – learning important lessons in taking enough film and about the relationship a camera creates between subject and photographer. It was fantastic to have the opportunity to talk with and listen to someone who has created such iconic works but a the same time admits to not always being able to get what she wants in one sitting.
The new portraits unveiled in this exhibittion reflect the changes in the roles of women today and feature women of outstanding achievement including artists, musicians, CEOs, politicians, writers and philanthropists. It’s worth taking the trip out to the Tokyo Bay area to take in the work in this unique space, admission is free and workshops have been set up for both families and school groups.
