Fashion satire illustrator Alexsandro Palombo returns with a set of drawings casting fashion key figures as iconic yellow skinned Simpsons characters. Hillary Alexander is a personal fave, just because she’s such a smashing character in real life, and love the donut eating Albert Ebaz.

Take a look at this BBC news video from back in 2010, the report details an exhibition that took place in London’s Barbican Art Gallery followed by Munich’s Haus der Kunst (careful how you pronunce that). ‘Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion’ gathers together works from leading Japanese designers and details their impact and influence on the fashion world.
From the Barbican website…
‘Future Beauty: 30 Years of Japanese Fashion is the first exhibition in Europe to comprehensively survey avant-garde Japanese fashion, from the early 1980s to the present. Curated by the eminent Japanese fashion historian Akiko Fukai, Director of the Kyoto Costume Institute, the exhibition explores the unique sensibility of Japanese design, and its sense of beauty embodied in clothing.
Japanese fashion made an enormous impact on the world fashion scene in the late 20th century and designers such as Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto redefined the very basis of fashion. Their works will be shown alongside Kawakubo’s protégé, the techno-couturier Junya Watanabe, together with the acclaimed Jun Takahashi, and the new generation of radical designers including Tao Kurihara, Fumito Ganryu, Matohu, Akira Naka, Mina Perhonen and Mintdesigns.’
In 2012 the exhibition is coming to Tokyo! Tentatively set for a July 28th opening at the Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art, it’s one of several exciting events we’ve heard are taking place in the capital this year.
German artist Anslem Reyle has collaborated with Dior on a range of accessories that defy the gloomy Winter months through which they will be available for a limited time. The collection makes it’s debut at Tokyo’s Isetan Shinjuku store tomorrow, January 4th, and we’ve collaborated with Dior to photograph several pieces from a Japanese perspective. Where as the original shots showed hints of Paris before a gloomy sky, (see the campaign here), our images capture some of the bags, wallets , scarves and bracelets from the collection amongst icons of the Tokyo cityscape. From Tokyo Tower to the banks of the Sumida River via temples and a Japanese garden, it’s a truly Japonaise affair. This meeting of fashion house heritage and contemporary art fits perfectly into the Tokyo setting, a futuristic city that retains the traditions of its past, each inspiring the other.

We’re big fans of Kyoto based artist Chocomoo’s work. Her fun infused work is inspired by fashion and music as well as traditional Japanese culture. Chocomoo has collaborated with singer Ai, H&M and Joyrich amongst others bringin her work to a wider audience. We use her portrait of us as our Twitter profile photo (see here). As we head into the New Year, we asked Chocomoo to produce an illustration celebrating the year of the dragon. We’ll post that in a couple of days, for now, here’s a look at some of Chocomoo’s previous work, more of which can be seen on her website below.

Yoko Ono is the artist behind an interesting new installation at Gallery 360º in Tokyo.
‘I WANT YOU TO REMEMBER ME / OBOETETE is a dramatic new installation of YOKO ONO dealing with shattered lives, loss and remembrance. Inspired by her own experiences of growing up in war-torn Japan, displacement and awareness of the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and now by the events of March 2011, ONO has created works that confront the emotions of the viewer and open up memories in each individual.
The installation I WANT YOU TO REMEMBER ME / OBOETETE serves as a window through which we can project our own thoughts, and find resonance in many areas of our own minds and experiences. This is one of the great abilities of ONO’s work, which time and again she has realized in many different ways with works such as FREIGHT TRAIN, Ex-It, WISH TREES, IMAGINE PEACE, and so many others.’

We finally made it to the Irving Penn and Issey Miyake Visual Dialogue Exhibition at the 21_21 Design Site last week. Actually this was our first time in this space, and what seems like a small building in the gardens of Midtown actually spreads deep underground giving a cavernous space to celebrate the relationship between these two remarkable talents. The Japanese designer sent his collection to be photographed by the New York based Penn over a two decade time period, this exhibition is a retrospective of this unique relationship and well worth a visit. The exhibition also displays some of Penn’s well known prints, making the exhibition a must for fashion and photography fans alike.
Omotesando Hills plays host to ‘Vivienne Westwood Shoes, An Exhibition 1973-2012′ which opens today, December 1st. Glass cases displaying the well crafted pieces fill the spacious hall in chronological order. I headed straight to 1993 and the purple Gillie shoes which anyone old enough in the 90′s will recall Naomi Campbell taking a tumble from during a Westwood Fashion show (video here). It’s impossible not to get lost in thinking of the places these shoes have walked throughout the years as Vivienne Westwood dressed everyone from Punks to Royalty and all in between. It’s easy to see how so many designers themselves have been ‘inspired’ by Vivienne Westwood’s work. There’s so much to take in, the attention to detail is incredible and makes the exhibition a must-see for anyone with the slightest interest in any kind of design.

Whether Mr. Brainwash is indeed a videographer turned pop-artist, or as some think a side project for Banksy, his work has gotten a lot attention. ‘Life is Beautiful’ (2008) was the first show by the artist, and many pieces form that body of work are coming to Japan as part of the ‘Contemporary Japan Gallery’ taking place from December ast 2011 – January 31st 2012 on the second floor of Hotel Grand Pacifica on Odaiba Isalnd in Tokyo Bay. Joe already saw a lot of the works at a show in New Yorks Meat Packing district back in Feb’ 2010 (photos above).
In the crowded realm of celebrity collections ‘The Row’ stands out as a quality brand with an increasing level of quality and subsequent fan base. Like it’s founders, the Olsen twins, the brand avoids cheap publicity tactics to take time and effort in to producing something to a high standard (and matching high price tag).
Aoyama Select store ‘Adelaide’ is brining the 2012 bag collection from The Row for a special Trunk Show taking place during store opening hours of 11.00 – 20.00 from November 24th – 26th.
