“Handsome Boys and Good-looking Men of Edo” Ota Memorial Museum of Art

Handsome Boys and Good-looking Men of Edo ukiyo-e tokyo musuem 1

The Ota Memorial Museum located in Harajuku is Tokyo’s only museum dedicated solely to Japanese ukiyo-e wood block prints.

When speaking of ukiyo-e wood-block prints, people mostly focus on pictures of beautiful women. In reality however, ukiyo-e wood-block prints have also frequently depicted attractive men, such as handsome boys and good-looking kabuki actors. Many leading ukiyo-e artists, including Suzuki Harunobu, Torii Kiyonaga, Kitagawa Utamaro, Katsushika Hokusai and Utagawa Kuniyoshi worked on such portrayals. For the artists, the figures of charming men were important subjects for their drawings. In this exhibition, we will focus on ukiyo-e wood-block prints that portray men and trace the history of the ideal male figure. We hope that through male figures depicted in these works of ukiyo-e wood-block prints, you will be able to feel the aesthetic consciousness of Edo people from a new angle.
