INTERVIEW Magazine has closed

FIRST COVER OF INTERVIEW MAGAZINE, 1969

Once the ‘crystal ball of pop’, Interview Magazine, founded by Andy Warhol in 1969, has closed.

From documenting the days of Warhol’s factory, Interview magazine has served the world an image of New York for which we all craved – mega celebrity, bold imagery, glamorous parties – all with a cool Manhattan edge. Through iconic editors and writers Ingrid Saschy and Glen O’Brien, Interview Magazine was the 90’s playground of photographers Herb Ritts, Bruce Weber and David La Chappelle.

All though details remain unclear, Interview seems to have become a victim of changing times and bad money management. There’s been no word yet on whether the name will continue as a digital media. We can only ask, is W next? It’s safer financially being a part of Conde Nast but that publication too looks to be struggling to find its place in an ever changing media market.

Back in 2005 Interview published an issue dedicated to Japan with a twin Nigo/Utada Hikaru covers. One of the striking things about this issue was the double page advertisements by luxury fashion houses that instead of using their seasonal campaigns, used images of their Tokyo flagships in a nod to the importance of the Japanese Market at that time. Those images below with a look at some of our favourite Interview Magazine covers above.
