1920年〜30年にかけてヨーロッパを席巻したアール・デコを代表する女性画家タマラ・ド・レンピッカ（Tamara de Lempicka）。ワルシャワの良家に生まれ、思春期をロシアとスイスで過ごし、18歳で弁護士レンピッキ伯爵と結婚する。翌年ロシア革命でパリへ亡命。働かない夫を尻目に画業で身を立てる決心。時代に翻弄されながらも女性の自由な生き方を実践し、狂乱の時代とも呼ばれた1920年代のパリで独特の作風により、画家として一躍注目された。やがて第二次世界大戦の脅威の中、アメリカに亡命。その後、時代とともに次第に忘れさられていった。そして70年代に再評価され、1980年に82歳でその劇的な人生を終えた。

The exhibition will focus on the artworks of the famous female artist Tamara de Lempicka. Lempicka has mainly worked in Paris in 1920’s and 30’s. Her unique and stylish artworks as well as her way of living and self-produced image made her the legendary ‘icon’ of Art Deco. This exhibition will not only be a retrospective of the artist but also an occasion to reevaluate her style and works in the art history by introducing the culture and social background in Paris back in that age.
