THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE

THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE

‘The September Issue’ finally has a Japan release date of November 7th. The film documents the making of the September 2007 issue, the biggest in the magazines history. What makes the story all the more interesting and relevant is the fact that it took place before the recession, the magazine was ‘like a phone book’ due to the amount of ads and 50,000 dollar photo shoots could be thrown out at the whim of editor Anna Wintour. In this respect the film documents a period in magazine publishing which will be very difficult to return to. The movie hinges on the relationship between Wintour and Creative Director Grace Coddington, two strong willed British women who have worked together for over 20 years (they started working together at US Vogue on the same day).

It’s a great movie no matter how much you are interested in fashion. It up-holds the American centric rhetoric that Wintour is the ‘most powerful woman in fashion’, one person suggests she is the most powerful woman in America. One pundit suggests there isn’t any area of fashion that Wintour doesn’t have a lot of influence in which could be questionable to the youth of Harajuku and Omotesando. For a look into the corporate world of high-end fashion, ‘The September Issue’ is an excellent piece.
