CIAO FALINE HARAJUKU

Each year we gather with friends and family to celebrate Valentine’s day together with the anniversary of Baby Mary’s iconic Harajuku store Faline Tokyo. Valentine’s day 2021 was Faline Tokyo’s 17th Anniversary party and its last. The first time I photographed the party was the 5th Anniversary in 2009, The Misshapes were the special guests, and the after-party was at Le Baron. Other than the times we were at New York fashion week or had work commitments, each year the party has served as a reunion for longtime friends together with the debut of fresh-faced Harajuku kids. We’d like to congratulate Baby Mary on the community she has fostered over the years, and all the Faline staff, past and present, for their friendship. (Mary’s Aoyama store, Miss Faline, is to continue.)

The closure of Faline is in part due to the increasing rental costs in the area as building by building the renewal of Takeshita Dori continues to change the face of Harajuku. Hyperbolic descriptions of this area talk of ever-changing trends, but the infrastructure of Takeshita itself hasn’t changed much since the ’90s. Conversely, Ura-Hara is a shadow of its former self with multiple empty retail spaces caused by the lack of overseas visitors and domestic travel caused by COVID-19. As ever we look forward to seeing what’s next.
